15+ Trending Corsage and Boutonniere Colours for 2025 Proms

Corsage and Boutonniere

In the whirlwind of prom preparations, the little details often make the biggest statement. And when it comes to those finishing touches, corsages and boutonnieres hold a special place in prom tradition. But what colours are making waves for 2025?

In this article:

  • What Is A Corsage?

What Is A Corsage?

Corsage

Basically, a corsage is that little flower arrangement girls wear on prom night. They're traditionally made with orchids or roses, but these days? People are getting super creative with feathers, ribbons, and even tiny LED lights for that extra wow factor.

Fun fact: The word "corsage" comes from French – "bouquet de corsage" – because they were originally worn pinned to a woman's bodice (the upper part of a dress). Today's wrist corsages offer more comfort and convenience while maintaining that touch of floral elegance.

What is A Boutonniere?

Boutonniere

That little flower guys wear on their suit jacket? That's a boutonniere (pronounced boo-tuh-NEER, if you're struggling). It's usually just a single flower or small cluster pinned to the left lapel.

While simpler than corsages, boutonnieres are no less significant. They typically feature a single bloom that complements the corsage worn by the wearer's date, creating a subtle visual connection between the couple.

Who's Supposed To Buy What?

So traditionally, the guy buys the corsage for the girl, and the girl buys the boutonniere for the guy. That's been the "rule" forever.

But honestly? Most of my friends split the cost or just go together to pick them out. My cousin Jake and his date actually made their own last year – they were a bit lopsided but uniquely THEM, which was pretty awesome.

Do whatever works for your situation! There's no prom police checking if you followed etiquette rules.

Where Do You Wear These Things?

Girls have two options:

  • On your wrist (most popular and WAY more comfortable for dancing)
  • Pinned to your dress (tricky with some fabrics and styles)

Guys, you're pinning that boutonniere to your left jacket lapel. Left side, not right – trust me on this one. My best friend put his on the right side last year and every photo looked slightly off!

The ACTUAL Trending Colours for 2025

Now for the moment you've been waiting for – what colours are dominating the 2025 prom flower scene?

1. "Sort-of Purple" Shades That Are Hard to Name

These aren't your basic purples. We're talking:

  • This misty lavender colour that looks almost gray in certain lights

  • Dusty lilac that has this vintage vibe, especially when paired with sage green leaves

  • Periwinkle blue-purple that photographs AMAZINGLY (seriously, it looks good on everyone)

2. Classic Colours That Won't Make You Cringe in Photos

Some colours just work year after year, but with fresh twists:

  • Deep burgundy (but now they're adding these tiny gold flecks that catch the light)

  • Navy blue flowers (these are usually dyed roses or delphinium – navy is HARD to find naturally)

  • White orchids with the tiniest hint of pink at the centers

  • Rich red roses (but smaller varieties, not the massive ones that looked like they were eating people's wrists in 2010)

3. "Look-At-Me" Bold Colours

Not for the faint of heart, but if you want to make a statement:

  • This electric blue that almost doesn't look real (but is SO cool with a black dress)

  • Hot magenta that's between pink and purple

  • Emerald green (not just as leaves, but as the main flower colour)

  • Tangerine orange that somehow works with WAY more dress colours than you'd think

4. Earth Tones (For the Cool Kids)

There's this whole earthy neutral trend happening:

  • This cappuccino/coffee coloured dahlia that looks SO sophisticated

  • Sandy taupe roses that look vintage in the best way

  • Honey-coloured spray roses that warm up any colour scheme

  • Eucalyptus as the MAIN element, not just the green filler (and it smells amazing)

5. Weird-But-Works Colour Combos

These sound crazy but look AMAZING:

  • Deep plum purple with bright yellow accents (sounds wild, looks incredible)
  • Coral pink with teal blue (gives beach vacation vibes)
  • Ruby red with mint green (has this cool retro feel)
  • Pale blush with charcoal gray (sophisticated but not boring)

Real Talk: Choosing What Works For YOU

Here's the actual helpful stuff to consider:

  • Your dress or suit colour is obvs the main thing – bring a swatch of fabric when you order
  • Think about your photo backdrop – some school gyms have weird coloured walls that clash with certain flowers
  • Order AT LEAST 2-3 weeks ahead – my friend waited until the last minute and got stuck with carnations when all the roses were sold out
  • Remember flash photography can change how colours look – super dark colours sometimes disappear in photos
